It's disgusting to think this gorgeous Golden Age theatre was once slated to become a parking lot.
  • Chapel of Memories (Columbarium), john (guest) wrote 16 years ago:
This is the Chapel of Memories, also designed by Julia Morgan. There is a curved balustrade from a 13th-century castle. It was brought over from Europe as part of a purchase for Hearst Castle, which Julia was also designing, Hearst didn't need it, or it didn't fit in. So it was purchased and brought here and is really a design anchor for the generally Gothic and Romanesque building. Perhaps the most recently noteworthy person interred here in the Columbarium is the Blues legend John Lee Hooker.

This is not the correct location for the Chapel of the Chimes. I originally "created" this place and somebody moved it. It is located on Piedmont Avenue...the red tile roofed structure. Whoever moved this location knows nothing about Julia Morgan or the local buildings or history. I DO. I'm getting sick of the powers that be at wikimapia removing or (in)correcting the locations I have contributed...based on knowledge and (or) research.

Actually it is or was an Alaska Airlines maintenance hangar. As of last summer it had the Alaska logos.

  • College of California (site), john (guest) wrote 16 years ago:
The college was moved to the north because of the "rowdiness" of the location...Heh! There are parts of Oakland today I'd call something other than "rowdy". This area's obviously settled down since then.

  • Warren Freeway - Hayward Fault, Downstrike (guest) wrote 16 years ago:
That is NOT how rift valleys form. Rift valleys form at zones of continental divergence, not at transform boundaries. Hayward is a transform fault, tributary to the the convergent San Andreas transform boundary, which connects between the East Pacific Rise and the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

everytime im on bart i look down toward west oakland and get a little sad. theres a lot of poverty but you can see "knots" wandering everywhere. it would be a tough place for a kid to grow up.

This is by far the best sandwich shop in Oakland -great prices, dripping meat with great service. I've been going there for the last 15 years and nothings changed about their quality, their kindness, and their business. Funny thing is they don't have any sign out front - like the no name seafood restaurant in Boston, but just as notorious for people in the know for good, comfort food.
  • Bilger Quarry, pablito (guest) wrote 16 years ago:
It's covered in a recent book of the history of this neighborhood of Oakland (Rockridge). It is indeed an abandoned quarry. See: http://www.amazon.com/Rockridge-Images-America-Robin-Wolf/dp/0738547999
  • Middle Harbor Shoreline Park, kellygrade wrote 16 years ago:
A fantastic park with expansive views, plenty of room for walking and play and nicely preserved historic remnants of the the rail and docking structures serving the San Francisco Bay ferries. A relatively new park that is still largely undiscovered by local residents. (11/22/08)

Ah yes...another lame cliche of a hipster tiki bar. It used to be the legendary Kings X of Silver & Black fame, back in the day.

Anyone know how deep it is? It's always spooked me out since I was a kid.
  • Posey and Webster Street Tubes, Posey Tunnel, john (guest) wrote 17 years ago:
this diagram is incorrect...it implies that the tubes converge...they do not. they are parallel and emerge in oakland on their own respective streets...Webster tube on Webster and the Posey tube on Harrison.
