  • Lake Chalet Seafood Bar and Grill, me (guest) wrote 13 years ago:
The main building was first constructed in 1909 as a high-pressure salt water pumping station for the Oakland Fire Department designed by John Galen Howard. In 1913, Walter D. Reed designed the two wings which were built to serve as a municipal boathouse called the Lake Merritt Boathouse. The wings included locker rooms, a tea room and several restaurants and became the center for regattas on the lake. The original pumping station stayed in operation until 1955 when building was converted to city offices. The Lake Merritt Rowing Club has used the lower south wing of the building for their activities since 1961. The building was renovated over 5 years to its current form through a partnership between the City of Oakland and the Chalet Proprietors who then opened the Lake Chalet Seafood Bar & Grill in 2009.
